How Much Does It Cost to Get a Power App Built?

Have you ever found yourself curious about the world of Power Apps? And have you stated to think about the cost to build Power Apps? Like many of our clients when they were first interested in the Power Platform,  you’re probably wondering about the cost of diving into the exciting realm of Power Apps. And while we’re at it, let’s chat about Power Automate too, because these two together are like the dynamic duo of the tech world! There are lots of app development companies out there, so here are some price guides to help your Power Platform journey.

Building any custom application requires you to have spent time thinking about the business logic, business processes, the data required. You may also consider if people need to use it remotely on mobile devices or even offline. Business applications also require some thought on integration requirements with other systems via custom connectors. Of course, this is where Power Platform wins as a development platform, because of how easy it is to support and integrate. Being a low code development platform, Power Apps is a leader in this area.

We are based in Australia, so we are using Australian Dollars as the pricing basis.

What impacts the costs of building a Power App?

1. Complexity and Functionality:

Versatility is at the heart and soul of your Power App! Just like ordering a coffee – some like it simple, while others fancy a bit more flair:

The Short & Sharp App

Think of an app that collects information from the user – a basic business application style app. Using the low code application platform that works on your computer and phone, has only 2 screens with some logic, and maybe captures attachments and sends some notifications upon completion. This might be around $3,000 to $7,000.

The Integrated Power App

We are now looking at an app that has some workflows, tasks or notifications. Normally, this app has 3 or 4 screens and some reporting. It could even have integration with other systems, or it manages a bit more data.  We have build mobile applications and internal business applications for clients who need a procurement request system or a safety inspection system, both needing automatic notifications. These systems can quickly become critical applications for businesses due to their function and compliance. We’re talking  $7,000 to $20,000 as an app development cost.

The Full Monty App

When you’re dreaming big – complex workflows, chat bots, integrated with other systems, maybe even creating documents, sending them for digital signing and more. You are now looking at more complex applications. Our larger apps will have 10 or more screens and lots of functionality.  We have built innovative business solutions to house risk, contract and case management systems. These solutions involve complex features that direct the flow of documents, involvement, and notification of people and trigger alerts. They are feature-rich, custom business apps that incur additional costs with complexity. So the cost of app development grows with the complexity. Expect these types of apps to start from $20,000 and can go upwards of $50,000.

2. Licensing Costs:

Licensing can be a bit of a minefield – do you need separate licenses, an app plan or a user per month deal? Getting your hands on a straight forward price list can be hard, so talking to a development agency could help reduce the credit card bill! Depending on your needs you might require a Power Apps Premium License. While there are options to remove this requirement, the cost of the license could be cheaper than a workaround. This could be $15 to $50 per month per user, or per app per user, depending on pricing plans. Its important that you consider who your target users are to ensure that the correct people, or parts of your business, are licensed users.

3. Making It Pretty:

If you’re after that unique look to match your brand’s vibe, we would suggest you engage a graphic designer, visual studio or UX expert to assist with the user interface, set aside an extra $2,000 to $5,000. Be upfront about design, otherwise, you may face hidden costs.

4. Ongoing Support & Enhancements:

All good things need a bit of support or the slightest tweak now and then. As soon people get something great, they want more. Support and enhancements might be around 10-20% of your initial spend each year. We don’t see this as hidden costs, as we like to discuss and plan this with our clients from the get go. Some companies provide per user plans, however at Propelle, we believe that a client wide plan is best value to support custom apps. Whichever development team you work with, start the ongoing support discussion during your initial quote because custom apps will need maintenance.

5. Integration With Other Systems:

Getting your Power App to talk nicely to a third party CRM, or with other systems can be where the big impact is made in your business and get you the big return on investment. Integration could be through API’s, Databases or even Robotic Process Automation (RPA). Depending on the complexity, it could be an extra $3,000 to $10,000.
